چکیده

We use the newly available ARD establishment level data set for UK manufacturing to document job creation and job destruction. With these data we can document job creation and destruction more fully than in previous studies. Due to data limitations, some studies are forced to ignore the contribution of entry and exit of firms to job creation destruction or use data that understate the number of small firms in the economy. We compute both the levels and rates of job creation and destruction between 1980 and 1991 and compare our findings with these previous studies of the UK and work carried out in other countries. We find: a) jc 7d rates of 10.0% and 13.5% respectively, higher job creation and destruction rates than other studies; b) large firms are responsible for about 60% of job destruction; and c) small firms are responsible for about between 50% and 68% of job creation, depending on calculation method.. Job Creation, Job Destruction and Labour Demand in Slovenia

This paper uses a unique firm level data base of traditional and newly established private enterprises to investigate gross job flows and labour demand in the transition period in Slovenia. We find that job destruction dominates job creation in the early years of transition, but later in the transition job destruction diminishes. The excess job reallocation rate, a measure for restructuring, is...

Job Creation and Job Destruction in a Transition Economy: Ownership, Firm Size, and Gross Job Flows in Polish Manufacturing

Comprehensive firm-level data for Polish manufacturing show that in state-owned firms the large drop in net employment since the start of the transition in 1990 has been driven by a jump in the job destruction rate; job creation, by contrast, is located disproportionately in the private sector. Small firms are more dynamic than large firms, but even after controlling for size, private firms hav...

Job Creation and Destruction : Evidence from Spain

In this paper we examine the effect of innovation on job creation and job destruction in Spanish manufacturing. Our empirical analysis is based on firm-level longitudinal data from which we have information on employment and innovation activity. The estimation approach consists of a two-step procedure that takes into account the fact that firms endogenously choose positive, negative or zero gro...

Job Flows and Productivity Dynamics: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing

Through their influence on the cross-sectional distribution of productivity across firms and workers, job creation and destruction likely have an impact on the rate at which aggregate productivity changes over time. However, the nature of this effect is not, a priori, clear. While a broad consensus has emerged suggesting that job destruction enhances productivity by eliminating inefficient prod...
